Youth & Adult Art Programs

Self Help Graphics provides children and adult art programs lead by
local artist and community members. Classes are added as they are available.

SHG Pequenos Artistas Summer Art Camp for children ages 6 to 12

Instructors: Coordinated by Los de Abajo Printmaking Collective Alternating Instructors: Poli Marichal, Kay Brown, Victor Rosas and Marianne Sadowski

SHG Summer Art Camp will enrich a child’s knowledge of art while exploring a wide variety of materials. At the Pequeños Artistas Summer Camp children are encouraged to express themselves, emphasizing creativity and experimentation through age-appropriate projects, themes and skills. Classes include drawing, tempera, mixed media, mask and puppet making and printmaking. Classes will end with an exhibition of the children’s work at the SHG Printmaking Workshop gallery on Saturday, July 28 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Each child will receive a class certificate upon completion of the workshop

Ages: 6 to 12

Class Schedule: Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

First Summer Session : Enrollment Deadline : June 23, 2008

week 1 – June 30 to July 4, 2008
week 2 – July 7 to July 11, 2008

First Session, week 1 or 2 - $200.00

First Session, weeks 1 & 2 - $380.00

Second Summer Session : Enrollment Deadline : June 23, 2008

week 1 –July 14 to July 18, 2008
week 2 –July 21 to July 25, 2008

Second Session, week 1 or 2 - $200.00

Second Session, weeks 1 & 2 - $380.00


Program Schedule

Daily: Fifteen minute yoga warm-ups - sun salutation stretch and mini-meditation.

Monday-Tuesday
Basic drawing & exercises (pencil and crayon drawing).
Basic color theory & exercises (tempera and construction paper collage).
The child will be introduced to elements of composition, rendering techniques, use of materials, perception exercises (use positive and negative space) while exploring still-life, landscape, portraiture and caricature. The child will also be given an introductory overview of Chicano/Latino art and introduced to prints from the collection at SHG.

11:30 am TO 12:30 pm
Lunch break
(students bring their own lunch bag and will be supervised by the staff.)

12:30 pm TO 3:00 pm
Basic printmaking.
Monoprint techniques.
The child will learn how to pull hand mono-prints using foam core and found objects and also the more traditional monoprint techniques by painting on plexiglass plates.

Wednesday – Friday
9:00 to 11:30am
Puppet & Mask Design & Construction.
The child will learn how to build basic rod and hand puppets and masks using recycled materials.  

11:30 am TO 12:30 pm
Lunch break
(students bring their own lunch bag and will be supervised by the staff).

12:30 pm TO 2:00 pm
Basic printmaking
Basic Linocut and Stamp Making for making cards and prints.
