Papel Flores

Come join the tradition, learn to create handcrafted paper flowers in preparation for the this years Dia De Los Muertos celebration at Self Help Graphics & Art. This workshop is open to all ages and families. Come and participate every week, as we transform the SHG grounds.

Paper Mache Mask

Special effects artist Alfred Zaquiera will instruct attendees in making a realistic, life size calavera mask for day of the dead.

Day of the Dead Card Making

Create unique and spooky hand made cards and invitations with your personal touch...yours!
You will leave this two hour class with 4 complete and embellished cards made using rubber
stamps, hole punchers, ribbons and much more. Let's celebrate dead in a fun way.

Journal Making

Why write on those ugly notepads? Your thoughts, words or even dead letters, I mean love letters deserve something better! In this class you will learn a fun and easy way, using beautiful papers and book cloth to?bind
a simple yet creative journal.

Dia De Los Muertos mascaras and Mask

You will decorate colorful calaca masks in this hands-on arts workshop. These festive masks will be used during the parade to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. You will use lots of different colors of tempura paints! Be prepared to get some paint on your clothes!

Instructors:
Becky Cortez is a Tejana, and she loves art. She thinks that it's important for the youth to participate in community arts programs, like those available at S.H.G. Becky is an elementary school teacher, and she uses art to help her students excel in learning.

Dewey Tafoya was born and raised in Boyle Heights. He interned at S.H.G. for a U.C.L.A. Chicano Studies class in 2003, and he hasn't stopped supporting S.H.G. programs since then. Dewey really enjoys working with the Dia de los muertos arts workshops.

Beginners Papel Picado

The workshop will be comprised of 3 Saturday, one hour, sessions. The workshop will present papel picado to students using simple techniques to create traditional papel picado panels and banners. At the end of the workshop, students will have prepared panels to be displayed at SHGÌs Dia de los Muertos celebration. Parents are encouraged to attend classes with their child.

Instructor: Heidi Gutierrez is a Los Angeles native whose interest in papel picado began as a hobby while watching Dodger games on the weekends. Her interests has grown and has created papel picado banners for numerous celebrations for family, friends and neighbors to enjoy

Water Color Butterflys

For kids and adults, two after school watercolor workshops for Dia De Los Muertos.  Join water colorist Victoria Delgadillo for a different look at the symbols of El Dia de los Muertos.  No previous watercolor skills are required, we will have all the supplies and materials you will need to create a one of a kind, personal recuerdo.  You may attend either one or both workshops and benefit immensely.
