Let us come together to celebrate our ancestors, Self Help Graphics & Art is happy to offer the following traditional Day of the Dead crafts that the whole family can do!
Procession Preparation - Paper Mache Puppet Construction
Work with community artist to create large scale paper mache calaveras for our annual Day of the dead procession.

La Virgin Decoration Workshop
Come help build and decorate a 6 foot paper mache virgin for our annual Day of the Dead procession.

Paper Mache Mask Making
Learn how to create masks using a plaster mold and paper mache. Help us create cool calavera masks for our Dia de los Muertos Procession. This is messy but tons of fun.
Instructor: Dewey Tafoya was born and raised in Boyle Heights. He interned at S.H.G. for a U.C.L.A. Chicano Studies class in 2003, and he hasn't stopped supporting S.H.G. programs since then. Dewey really enjoys working with the Dia de los muertos arts workshops.

Family-Altar-On-A-Stick
Come build your very own family Altar. We would like to encourage every family in the community to come to this workshop and build an altar in honor of their family. Each family will receive a 16" X 24" foam core 'Picket Sign' blank as a fondation to decorate with photos and other remembrances. Use this family altar to participate in our annual Day of the Dead procession November 2!

Come join the tradition, learn to create handcrafted paper flowers in preparation for the this years Dia De Los Muertos celebration at Self Help Graphics & Art. This workshop is open to all ages and families. Come and participate in creating flowers to be used on our community altar.

You will decorate colorful calaca masks in this hands-on arts workshop. These festive masks will be used during the parade to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. You will use lots of different colors of tempura paints! Be prepared to get some paint on your clothes!

The workshop will present papel picado to students using simple techniques to create traditional papel picado panels and banners. At the end of the workshop, students will have prepared their very own string of traditional papel picado to take with them for their Dia de los Muertos celebrations. Parents are encouraged to attend classes with their child.
Instructor: Heidi Gutierrez is a Los Angeles native whose interest in papel picado began as a hobby while watching Dodger games on the weekends. Her interests has grown and has created papel picado banners for numerous celebrations for family, friends and neighbors to enjoy
