Mexica New Years Workshops 2007
In addition to the 1 day celebration on March 17, Self Help Graphics will sponsors 4 weeks
of workshops for the whole family as a preparation for the Mexica New Year!
What would a celebration be without a piñata? Learn to make a traditional 5-pointed constellation piñata----just in time for the Mexica New Year Celebration! This group project (open to all ages) will give students the basics on designing a piñata base, adhering layers of newspaper with a gluing medium and decorating the finished beautiful star with tissue and paint. All are encouraged to drop-in at any point of the construction or attend every session. Hmmmm….we wonder what goodies Dewey will fill the piñata with? Wear work clothes---great art can be a little messy. All supplies provided.

Join legendary artist and community activist, Leo Limon for teachings on the Mexica Calendar, culture and art. Leo Limón was born and still resides in East Los Angeles and has been called the “Alley River Cat Artist" for the cat faces he painted on the cement walls channeling the Los Angeles River. Leo’s work on paper deals mostly with the indigenous ideals of "corazón" and uses many Aztec symbols. His contribution to the Self Help Graphic’s landscape was by helping, along with other ELA artists, in the development of the annual Day of the Dead celebration and the atelier printmaking program.

Join us in making Self Help Graphics' history. We are making the FIRST FLAG to be flown over our home of art in ELA! Everyone in the family is invited to help create this flag to commemorate the Mexica year of the Acatl (reed). All supplies will be provided during these 2 Saturday workshops. We each will help design, cut and pin pieces of material together, which will be sewn by our workshop leader into a beautiful flag. Mark your calendar for the lifting of our flag on March 17, 2007. Together, everything is possible!

Join us in making a special/one of a kind quilt composed of found objects, greens or flowers and scraps. Everyone in the family is welcome to bring things or use things contributed by the workshop leader, Irina Contreras. Each object will be sealed in plastic and ultimately sewn together to form a narrative of our community. This will be a time to chat, have snacks from Irina's garden and make art! Irina is an artist and activist currently living in Elysian/Echo Park but dreadfully missing the days of playing in the sprinklers in B.H.
