January 2022 Update

👋🏾 Hi art familia,
Due to the rise in positive COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County, we have canceled or postponed our upcoming January 2022 programs and workshops. However, you can continue to RSVP to view The Shell in the Clouds exhibition (pictured) on view for the next few weeks. Our gallery is open Tuesday-Friday and weekends during public programming with registration.

Please note our COVID-19 visitor requirements: All visitors must wear a mask at all times, including vaccinated guests. In accordance with the City of Los Angeles municipal code, Self Help Graphics will need to verify proof of vaccination for people 12+, or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of visiting our cultural center. All people 18+ must also show identification upon entry. Thank you for working with us to ensure the health and safety of all visitors.

Register for our February Programs & Workshops

Our Artist Lab: In the Studio virtual program continues live on our Instagram @SHG1970 with Boyle Heights-based Illustrator and Printmaker, Ernesto Vasquez, on Wednesday, February 9 at 12:30 p.m. PST! Ernesto uses printing techniques, including linoleum block printing, woodblock printing, and silkscreen, to create works with themes ranging from political to mythic. His family, upbringing in East Los Angeles, street art, social justice, community empowerment issues, and ties to Solidarity Ink are core to his process and influence.

Experiment with creating 8x10 linocut prints in this Advanced Linocut Workshop led by The Shell in the Clouds featured exhibition artist, Pavel Acevedo, on Saturday, February 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Self Help Graphics & Art. Learn more and register on Eventbrite here.

This workshop is for individuals with intermediate to advanced knowledge in linocut printmaking. Supplies will be provided. This workshop is recommended for ages 15+. Minors must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the workshop.

Join us for our monthly free Family Workshop on Saturday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Self Help Graphics. Learn how to weave using a simple cardboard loom to create your own friendship bracelet! Learn more and register on Eventbrite here.

We invite self-identified Zapotec youth to join our next Wellness Wednesday on February 16, 2022 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., for a storytelling circle, followed by a relaxing art activity. Led by Zapotec SHG Youth Committee Members, Sabrina Mendoza and Kimberly Espinosa, this gathering is uniquely open to Zapotec youth, ages 15-25. Qualifying youth may register on Eventbrite here.

Our youth will gather to create relationships and share stories of ancestors, migration and resilience. The event coincides with Pável Acevedo’s exhibition The Shell in the Clouds, and the simultaneous youth pop-up exhibition curated by Mendoza and Espinosa.

Our DIY Silkscreen Workshop with Dewey Tafoya is back on Saturday, February 19 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. ($30)! Our one-day, do-it-yourself workshop teaches participants how to print using a stencil or photo process onto a screen. Create your own posters, fine art, print tote bags or t-shirts! This workshop is recommended for ages 12+. Minors must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the workshop. Learn more and register on Eventbrite here.

Open call for self-identified Indigenous Oaxacan youth artists to submit work for a pop-up exhibition happening in tandem with Pavel Acevedo's exhibition A Shell in the Clouds! The deadline has been extended to January 26, 2022. All mediums will be accepted. Learn more and submit artwork here.

The exhibition will be curated by SHG Youth members, Sabrina Mendoza and Kimberly Espinosa. The exhibition will be on view in the Self Help Graphics from February 7, 2022-February 25, 2022.

Self Help Graphics presents The Shell in the Clouds (El caparazón en las nubes) book launch and artist talk on Saturday, February 19 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. with the featured artist, Pavel Acevedo and Dr. Xóchitl M. Flores-Marcial. Professor Flores-Marcial is an interdisciplinary historian on Indigenous Intellectual and Cultural History focusing on the Zapotec society of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Pavel and Xóchitl will discuss identity, communities in Los Angeles, the stories carried throughout generations, and how they are perceived today. Guests will have an opportunity to purchase a signed book and view the exhibition on the last day of its viewing.
