Dear SHG Community,

At Self Help Graphics, we are part of a long tradition where art and advocacy are inseparable. Artists have always participated in movements for justice, using creativity to preserve memory, tell the truth and inspire us forward. We must confront this moment.

Dolores Huerta has broken a 60 year silence to name what happened to her.

WE BELIEVE DOLORES. WE BELIEVE ANA MURGUIA. WE BELIEVE DEBRA ROJAS.

We believe the survivors who came forward. We honor their bravery and courage.

The farmworker movement has never been one man.

The movement is Dolores Huerta. The movement is the women who labored and organized and held everything together and, as we now know, sometimes paid an unbearable price to do so. It is thousands of people from many walks of life, who gave their bodies and their years to a cause bigger than themselves. That is what deserves to be honored.

For survivors of sexual violence everywhere, this kind of story can resurface pain that has nothing to do with this week’s news and everything to do with what you have carried. If that is you, you are not alone. Please take care of yourself, reach out to a trusted friend.

We have a responsibility to support victims and center their voices. We must confront the harm within movements that have often been minimized to protect legacy, and that minimization is itself an act of oppression. Challenging harm requires fortitude. Changing our cultures to respect women and children requires change from all of us.

En Self Help Graphics & Art, formamos parte de una larga tradición donde el arte y la justicia social son inseparables. Creemos a los sobrevivientes que se presentaron. Honramos su valentía y coraje.

El movimiento de trabajadores agrícolas nunca ha sido un solo hombre.

El movimiento es Dolores Huerta. El movimiento son las mujeres que trabajaron, organizaron y mantuvieron todo unido y, como ahora sabemos, a veces pagaron un precio insoportable por hacerlo. Son miles de personas de muchos ámbitos de la vida, que dieron sus cuerpos y sus años a una causa más grande que ellos mismos. Eso es lo que merece ser honrado.

Para los sobrevivientes de violencia sexual en todas partes, este tipo de historia puede resurgir el dolor que no tiene nada que ver con las noticias de esta semana y todo lo que tiene que ver con lo que han llevado. Tenemos la responsabilidad de apoyar a las víctimas y centrar sus voces. Debemos enfrentar el daño dentro de movimientos que a menudo se ha minimizado para proteger el legado, y donde la minimización es, en sí mismo, un acto de opresión. Desafiar el daño requiere fortaleza. Cambiar nuestras culturas para respetar a las mujeres y los niños requiere un cambio de todos nosotros.
