(DTLA), with some of LA’s finest cultural artists and artisans, specializing in unique gifts for the holidays! Our Holiday Marketplace is one of our favorite pop-ups of the year to shop, and eat delicious food prepared by a local street food vendor, sprinkled with cultural fun holiday vibes! Registration is not required, but encouraged here.

Join artists and scholars this Sunday, December 3 at 2PM at the Los Angeles Central Library, as we explore Self Help Graphics & Art at 50. This conversation will focus on Self Help’s community-based aesthetic philosophies and how artists have adapted and implemented those ethics in practice. Arrive for the panel discussion from 2PM-3PM and participate in the print workshop between 2PM-4PM. Focused on the last fifty years and the next fifty years, Dr. J.V. Decemvirale and Dr. Claudia Zapata will hold conversation with Yreina Cervantez, Miyo Stevens-Gandara and Natalie Godinez, all socially-engaged artists who worked and trained at Self Help Graphics.

This panel accompanies the publication of the most recent anthology of this important Los Angeles art history: Self Help Graphics at Fifty: A Cornerstone of Latinx Art and Collaborative Artmaking (eds. Tatiana Reinoza and Karen Mary Davalos UC Press, 2023).

Self Help Graphics and Prospering Backyards present a Soil Time! Family Holiday Workshop on Saturday, December 9, 2023, in honor of World Soil Day, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., at the East Los Angeles County Library. Teaching Artist Dalila Paola Mendez will lead a holiday seasonal art making workshop using paper and watercolor. Register here.

The East Los Angeles County Library is located at 4837 E 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90022, directly across from the Metro L Line East LA Civic Center Station, at 3rd Street and Mednik Avenue. This workshop is open to all ages and no prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided to participants. Masks are optional.

Note: After December our monthly Family Workshop will resume in the new year, beginning February 10, 2024.

Meet us for our next Wellness Wednesday on January 17, 2024 at Latinx with Plants, to learn how to use art as a mindfulness practice. This gathering will be led by licensed therapist Nadia Paredes, will begin with a body scan meditation to connect attendees with their inner creative and find artistic inspiration. Through a process based watercolor exercise, the group will capture the imagery that emerged from the meditation and continue deepening their mindfulness practice as they create art intuitively. Facilitator Nadia Paredes helps people connect with their inner creativity and empower their mind and soul through her expressive arts programs. Nadia is the founder of Nadia Paredes - Creative Studio, a bilingual resource for empowering, healing, and artistic inspiration. With expertise and training as an Art Therapist, Intuition Painting Facilitator and a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist, Nadia creates programs for transformation, creativity, and art making as a mindfulness practice.
