Our 48th Annual Día de los Muertos Exhibition and Celebration, returns *in-person on Saturday, October 30 from 4:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. at Self Help Graphics & Art.

Deck out your car into a moving altar and participate in our Car Caravan at 1:00 p.m. on October 30 (details TBA) or dress up in your favorite Día de los Muertos fashion and take part in our walking Procession on October 30 from Mariachi Plaza to SHG (time TBA). Stay tuned for further information about our Bike Caravan on November 6.

SHG is located at 1300 E. 1st St. Los Angeles, CA. 90033, in the neighborhood of Boyle Heights. Street parking is extremely limited. Please carpool, use a rideshare app or take public transit, such as the Metro L Line (Gold) to the Pico/Aliso station. We are located directly across the street from the Metro L Line Pico/Aliso station and Mendez High School.

Our annual Día de los Muertos exhibition is one of the highlights of the season, and this year is no exception! Join us for the opening of Everything Connected: Land, Body, Cosmos, curated by our 2021 Commemorative Print Artist, Miyo Stevens-Gandara on Saturday, October 9 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in our gallery. The exhibition will run from October 9 - November 24, 2021 and the public may view the exhibition by appointment on Eventbrite.

The in-person exhibition pairs nine visual artists with nine performative artists (music, theatre, poetry) to develop a body of work around the idea that everything is connected– nothing in the world exists on its own: our existence, community, environment, health, and well-being, cultural practices, and the planet. Participants can view the artwork in person and experience the audio piece through QR codes. A small self-published catalog will be available.

Everything Connected: Land, Body, Cosmos features artists Miyo Stevens-Gandara, Usen Gandara, Luis Generao-Garcia, Sandra Low, Elyse Pignolet, Pavel Acevedo, J. Leigh Garcia, Ann Johnson, Carmen Argote, Wayne Perry, Sesshu Foster, Joe Galarza, Harry Gamboa Jr., Beaux Mingus, Amy Shimshon-Santo, George Wheeler, Endy Trece, Xochi Flores, and Ben Caldwell.

Workshops

The season begins Saturday, October 2, with our traditional Día de los Muertos free family workshops such as Papel Picado, Marigold Paper Flowers, and Paper Mache, taking place at Self Help Graphics October 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Register on Eventbrite to participate!

Artists Miyo Stevens-Gandara and Wayne Perry will offer a free one-day workshop on October 2 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Self Help Graphics, where participants will activate a Memorial Tree Project; a living memorial, with small ceramic plates with their messages to commemorate losses the community has suffered these past two years. The ceramic notes will serve to process loss and grief or to express hopes for the future. The Memorial Tree Project, a symbol of endurance and perseverance, will be a permanent installation at SHG.

In addition to these workshops, learn to make a calaca cartonería (papier-mâché skeleton) in our Dancing Calacas workshop ($25 fee). Artist William Acedo will lead this special four-date series at Self Help Graphics on Friday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Thursdays October 14, 21 and 28 at 7:00 p.m. Sign up as an individual or with a partner or a small group to create a calaca together. Due to the time-intensive process, only one calaca will be created per group with a maximum of 10 calacas. Your calacas will be included as part of the Self Help Graphics Day of the Dead celebration! Pre-registration is required to attend. *Please note that participants who register for the Dancing Calacas workshop commit to attend all four dates.
