Kelvin Lopez’s Trèfle Utopique and Valet Dystopique were created in part of the “Utopia/Dystopia” portfolio, curated by artist Miyo Stevens-Gandara. Miyo invited 26 artists to each pick two cards from a full deck, incorporating a diverse range of interpretations and ideas into a single, unified collection. Lopez’s utopian print occupies space with an array of textures and organic shapes. While, in his dystopian image, Lopez represents a sudden sense of falling apart and shattering. What was once a diamond is now interrupted, fractured, and fragmented.

With a strong foundation in art history, Lopez has been greatly influenced by ndigenous and non-western representations of culture and philosophy via symbolism. His deep interest in the metaphysical and mystical reflects his work’s exploration of abstract concepts such as space, time, and spirituality. He imbues his work with life and energy, and as a form of communication about the  metaphysical concepts of cycles of creation and existence. His art leaves the viewer with a feeling of serenity.

Lopez considers himself an emerging artist focusing primarily on printmaking and painting. He received a B.F.A. in Printmaking from California State University, Long Beach, and is currently an M.F.A in Printmaking candidate from Rhode Island School of Design in 2021.
