Wayne Healy,
Transcendental Love, 2006
Serigraph, Ed. 73
20 x 26 in.

This print, made for Self Help Graphics’s 2006 Day of the Dead celebration, shows an Aztec warrior's body resting tranquilly on a caterpillar, while his mate holds and releases his spirit, which transcends into an enlarged monarch butterfly. And although border patrol in the background stands ready to stop this migration, Healy’s signature linework and use of light color make a joyous and festive print that shows death and its rituals as transformative and transcendent.

Wayne Healy is best known as half of the public art duo, East Los Streetscapers, established in 1975 with his childhood friend David Botello. A legacy artist at Self Help Graphics, Healy has produced a number of print works over more than 40 years, including serigraph, mono-silkscreen and etching media. Healy's imagery depicts everyday scenes that are cultural and/or universal. His art is recognizable by vigorous draftsmanship, dramatically angled compositions and strong colors. His work is in public and private collections on six continents.
