Inspired by the Mexica codices, Chicana Codex is a self-portrait with a collection of fragments and symbols all around that derive from the Tonalpohualli (Mexica Calendar), codices, and aspects of the artist's life. Guided by the writings of late Chicana author and scholar Gloria Anzaldúa, Delgado wanted to reflect on her identity through this print. The chapter "Tlilli, Tlapalli: The Path of the Red and Black Ink" (which translates to writing and wisdom) in her Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza initiated the idea for this work. Overall, the work reflects the artist's ongoing exploration of being Mexican American/Chicana in the U.S.

Maestrxs Atelier:
This Maestras Atelier is made of a wide range of artists from seasoned to emerging and with varying experiences in screen-printing from well versed to new to the medium. The artists were chosen for the bold attitudes displayed in their creative practices. It was the intention of this atelier to highlight those voices and their thoughts in this strange time of rethinking our lives and creative practices. Because of the pandemic, these artists have all worked with SHG in varying capacities to complete a screenprint for the Maestras Atelier.

Artist Biography:
Yaneli Delgado is a proud Mexican American born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, and four years later, she graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara with a double major in Sociology and Spanish. Yaneli moved back to South Central L.A. and wanted to be a resource to students in the community. While she continued to work at her former high school and Nava College Prep Academy, she was inspired to go back to school. Delgado found her interests in Printmaking and is currently at CSU Long Beach, where she will be receiving her Art Education Credentials by Fall 2020. Many African American, Chicana/o, Mexican, Latin American muralists, and printmakers have influenced her work. She believes a printing press can be a powerful tool for the artist as he or she can send a powerful message with a touch of ink.
