professional printmaking program

The Professional Printmaking Program is the artistic foundation of Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG). The acclaimed Professional Printmaking Program has produced over 750 editions and offers artists of various experiences the opportunity to create limited edition silkscreen serigraphs and monoprints through a peer-led approach that is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment that supports our artists’ creativity and careers.

As one of the most recognized Latino printmaking centers in America, SHG is committed to taking more innovative approaches in everything it does. We have been dedicated to working with artists in exploring the juxtaposition of traditional and non-traditional printmaking processes and to the development of content that is both culturally relevant and investigative. As is our tradition and mission, emerging artists will be central in helping us experiment in each atelier.

Our Professional Print Program is supported in part by the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Pasadena Art Alliance, Sisters of St. Francis, Eastside Arts Initiative, LA County Arts Commission, Ford Foundation, and our artists, volunteers, collectors, and Board of Directors.

UTOPIA/
DYSTOPIA

Curated by Miyo Stevens-Gandara
Artwork by Poli Marichal, Utopia (detail), 2019

EXHIBITION panel disCussion: UTOPIA/DYSTOPIA

friday, june 28, 2019 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Utopia/ Dystopia is a portfolio of fine art prints created in the form of a deck of 52 playing cards. Curated by Artist and Printmaker, Miyo Stevens-Gandara, twenty-six artists were invited to create two cards for the deck to create their interpretation of utopia and dystopia. The deck of cards allows the project to bring many different artists and styles together creating one unified artwork- a full deck, redefining a traditional portfolio. The concept of a deck of cards is intended to reference many things- games of chance, luck, fortune, war, solitude, precarious situations (house of cards), magic, empire, and divination. It serves as a container for many ideas, and each artist has chosen their own direction.

Join Curator and Artist, Miyo Stevens-Gandara, for a Utopia/Dystopia panel discussion on June 28, 2019 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM (during the People’s Printmaking Week), along other artists in the exhibition, to discuss their process and approach to a portfolio with a of fine art prints created in the form of a deck of 52 playing cards on view.

Márquez, Dalila Mendez, Wayne Perry, Sandy Rodriguez, Victor Rosas, Marianne Sadowski, Dewey Tafoya, Alex Fridrich-Ward, Christian Salcedo Ward and Andi Xoch.
