SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART AND THE LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE GALLERY PROUDLY PRESENT
‘BATTLE OF THE SAINTS’ EXHIBITION MARCH 7-April 27

Los Angeles, Calif. – Self Help Graphics & Art is proud to present Battle of the Saints, an exhibition curated by Natalie Godinez and Lulu Urdiales, opening Thursday, March 7, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Long Beach City College Art Gallery (LBCC). The exhibition will be on view through April 27, 2024. The LBCC Art Gallery is located at 4901 East Carson St. Long Beach, CA. 90808. The gallery is open weekly Tuesday-Thursday, from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

"Battle of the Saints is an homage to Self Help Graphics' 50th anniversary by highlighting themes seen across our print archive while setting the organization in its current contemporary context by pairing serigraphs from our Professional Printmaking Studio alongside local artists," said Natalie Godinez, Community Engagement & Youth Programs Manager and co-curator of the exhibition.

JENNIFER M. CUEVAS, ITS NEXT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 

Los Angeles, Calif. - Following the announcement and several months' search for a new Executive Director, the renown Los Angeles-based Chicano/Latinx visual arts organization, Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG), announces its newest Executive Director, Jennifer M. Cuevas. Cuevas is an LA-based arts leader, entrepreneur and advocate, seasoned cultural producer and communications executive, who will begin her tenure as the organization’s Executive Director effective Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

“It’s with great pride and enthusiasm that we announce the naming of Jennifer M. Cuevas as our newest Executive Director. Jennifer is a visionary leader who brings expertise in business development, strategic communications and community engagement, a “trifecta” effect in the nonprofit sector.  She has been an integral part of the SHG team as a consultant since 2017, and has supported our senior leadership and Board widening SHG’s visibility locally and nationally,”  said Board President, Paulina M. Flores. “She’s an esteemed cultural executive in Los Angeles with an extensive history in the arts and culture sector and is stepping into her role with a clear sense of purpose and energy, as we prepare for the Capital renovation and honor our 50 year legacy.”

SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF ART AND CULTURE WITH PAPER FASHION GALA AND RUNWAY SHOW MAY 20 AT FRANKIE LA

Los Angeles, Calif. – Self Help Graphics & Art celebrates 50 years of art and culture making with the return of its Biennial Paper Fashion Gala and Runway Show on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. The event will take place at Frankie LA, located at 300 S Mission Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90033 in Boyle Heights. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite here.

This year's fashion show and runway event will be hosted by Annie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot, Gentefied) and Eric Resendiz (ABC7) and honor Judithe Hernandez (SHG Legacy Artist), Rose Ramirez (Former Board Member), and Bank of America. The runway show will showcase 13 designs by 12 artists, of wearable paper fashion, motivated by prints selected from Self Help Graphics’ vast archive. SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART SECURES 1.5M FEDERAL GRANT FROM HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT TOWARD CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND BUILDING RENOVATION

Los Angeles, Calif. (March 15, 2023)– Chicano/x and Latinx arts legacy organization and cultural center, Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG), is proud to announce that it has  secured $1.5 million in federal grant funding from the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development toward its Capital Campaign. SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART RECEIVES $250,000
BY S. MARK TAPER FOUNDATION TOWARD
ITS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND BUILDING RENOVATION

Los Angeles, Calif. (January 31, 2023)– Renown Los Angeles-based Chicano/x and Latinx arts organization and cultural center, Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG), is proud to announce that it has  been granted $250,000 from the S. Mark Taper Foundation toward its Capital Campaign. The generous grant will support SHG’s building renovation and will be highlighted in the naming of the dynamic central area of its building to the “S. Mark Taper Foundation Community Gathering Space”. SHG’s capital renovation will commence in spring 2023 and make critical improvement to its 112-year old building and cultural center site in Los Angeles, California (Boyle Heights).

“We’re very excited to receive the notable support of the S. Mark Taper Foundation toward our capital renovation. The $250,000 grant will positively impact the renovation of our building and be uplifted through the renaming of the dynamic and central hub of our cultural center, to the ‘S. Mark Taper Foundation Community Gathering Space’,” says SHG Executive Director, Betty Avila. 49TH ANNUAL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS SEASON BEGINNING OCTOBER 8– FREE WORKSHOPS, EXHIBITION, ALTARS AND CELEBRATION

Los Angeles, Calif. (September 2022)– Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) is proud to present its 49th Annual Dia de los Muertos season with free workshops, exhibition, altars and celebration beginning Saturday, October 8-Saturday, November 23.

The thematic workshops begin Saturday, October 8, along with the opening of the Día De los Muertos exhibition, Canciones de ti, curated by this year’s Commemorative Print Artists, Adriana Carranza and Alfonso Aceves (Kalli Arte Collective).

Noche de Ofrenda returns to SHG Wednesday, November 2 and the free Día de los Muertos celebration will take place at Self Help Graphics on Saturday, November 5 from 4:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., in a festival-style setting with live entertainment co-curated by The Paramount and Self Help Graphics, an exhibition, a cultural market and street food vendors. SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART REACHES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN MILESTONE, PAYS OFF MORTGAGE

Self Help Graphics & Art to Host Community Celebration Reception
on Friday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Los Angeles, Calif. (June 20, 2022)– Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) has reached a key milestone in its Capital Campaign and has successfully repaid its mortgage this spring, just four years after the acquisition of Self Help Graphics & Art’s current headquarters, located at 1300 E. 1st Street Los Angeles, CA. 90033 (Boyle Heights). In addition to this prodigious news, SHG has hired Los Angeles-based NAC Architecture and renovation project manager, TELACU, to oversee the execution of its building renovation, which is slated to begin spring 2023. 

“The repayment of the building is a monumental accomplishment for Self Help Graphics & Art, which began in the garage of our co-founder, Sister Karen Boccalero and has since had three different homes,” said Executive Director, Betty Avila. “It is powerful that on the precipice of 50 years, Self Help Graphics & Art can gift its permanency to the Chicano community, that has carved out a legacy of cultural contributions within its walls, and that has buoyed it over decades of systemic underinvestment. SHG can now center its full energy on the work our community needs most– a space for cultura, creativity, inspiration, and affirmation.”

WE RISE GARDEN CONCERT

Los Angeles, Calif. (May 25, 2022) – Self Help Graphics presents its WE RISE culminating event, Concert in the Garden, emceed by Alison de la Cruz, featuring the activist theater dance group, Contra-Tiempo; with musical performances by Eddika Organista, Azul Osani Carrillo, SHG Youth Committee members Nadia Olea and Leather Tramp, as well as poetry by Sam Nieves, Féi Hernandez, Moni Perez and Tina Calderón (Gabrielino Tongva & Ventureno Chumash).

This event is for all ages. The public is encouraged to bring a blanket to sit and enjoy the free outdoor concert, fresh churros by El Panzón Churro and coffee by Picaresca Cafe.

(February 23, 2022) – Self Help Graphics & Art is proud to present Donut W(h)ole, a solo exhibition by the artist Phung Huynh opening Saturday, March 12 at 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view March 12 through May 27, 2022 at the Self Help Graphics & Art gallery. Self Help Graphics is located at 1300 E. 1st St. LA, CA. 90033.

Donut W(h)ole is an homage to the Cambodian immigrant and Cambodian American (Khmerican), the aftermath of warfare and genocide, stories of survival, determination, and commitment to the family unit. The exhibition is also a celebration of the Cambodian stories told through the lens of 1st and 2nd generation Khmericans who grew up in their family's donut shop.
