About the shg Youth Committee

The Self Help Graphics Youth Committee is a paid opportunity for youth to support SHG’s youth-led programs and events, such as exhibitions, pop-ups, art installations, etc, uplifting issues important to young people in the community. Members develop leadership skills and learn how the arts play a role in storytelling, advocacy, civic engagement, and more! The committee will have access to enriching opportunities, such as learning and engaging with guest speakers and gaining art-making skills. Guest speakers range from artists to community organizers and arts professionals. Most importantly, members connect and collaborate with like-minded peers!

The Youth Committee is open to ages 15-20 living in Los Angeles, with preference given to residents living on the Eastside of LA. The committee's commitment is for 9 months, from September to early June. The SHG Youth Committee works closely with SHG’s Community Engagement & Youth Programs Manager and our Education and Public Programs Coordinator.

The SHG Youth Committee meets weekly on Thursdays, and members receive a stipend for participation.

ABOUT SHG YOUTH ARTIVISM internship

The Youth Artivism Internship is a program aimed at integrating more art and youth voices into our housing justice advocacy with Eastside LEADS. It is open to youth ages 18-24 living in Los Angeles who have an interest in advocacy, activism, and the arts, as well as strong ties to the community.

It provides participants with the experience of using art as a tool for social action and addresses issues set by Eastside LEADS. The interns work closely with SHG’s Community Engagement & Youth Programs Manager and the Eastside LEADS staff to inform and help develop art projects, activations, and/or exhibitions responding to the issues of displacement and gentrification.

Participants receive training and guidance on civic engagement, how to lead programming, artivism, and issues of interest to their communities. The interns have a commitment of 20 hours per month for a 9-month term. The internship includes a stipend for participation.
