FEATURING ARTISTS JONAH ELIJAH, WILLIAM CAMARGO AND ÁLVARO MARQUEZ
Los Angeles, Calif. (December 1, 2020)– Self Help Graphics & Art presents Intersections, a virtual exhibition on view from December 12, 2020 through February 6, 2021, featuring artworks by recent MFA graduates, Artists William Camargo (MFA Claremont Graduate University), Jonah Elijah (MFA Claremont Graduate University) and Álvaro D. Márquez (MFA California State University, Long Beach). The three artists utilize seemingly disparate aesthetic strategies (photography, painting, and printmaking) but address overlapping conversations about the development of the urban environment and enforcement of racial hierarchies through social and economic policies or police enforcement of racist and classist legal structures.
“The term ‘intersections’ is a multivalent concept that speaks to the intersections of race, class, and gender in the construction of socio-political realities, but also alludes to the ways that urban environments have been shaped by processes of development that render vulnerable the most marginalized in society. To intersect, in this context, is also to engage in a sustained conversation about the ways in which Black and Brown communities can foster solidarity in the struggle against the effects of racial capitalism and the ways in which this shapes our daily lives,” said its co-Curators, William Camargo, Jonah Elijah and Álvaro D. Márquez, in their curatorial statement. All three artists in the show are recent MFA graduates whose thesis exhibits were cancelled, altered, or postponed due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Los Ángeles, Calif. (1 de diciembre de 2020) - Self Help Graphics & Art orgullosamente presenta Intersections, una exposición virtual a la vista desde el 12 de diciembre de 2020 hasta el 6 de febrero de 2021, con obras de arte de los recién graduados de MFA, los artistas William Camargo (MFA Claremont Graduate University), Jonah Elijah (MFA Claremont Graduate University) y Álvaro D. Márquez ( MFA Universidad Estatal de California, Long Beach). Los tres artistas utilizan estrategias estéticas aparentemente dispares (fotografía, pintura y grabado), pero abordan conversaciones superpuestas sobre el desarrollo del entorno urbano y la aplicación de jerarquías raciales a través de políticas sociales y económicas o la aplicación policial de estructuras legales racistas y clasistas.
“El término ‘intersections’ (traducido como ‘intersecciones’), es un concepto multivalente que habla de las intersecciones de raza, clase y género en la construcción de realidades sociopolíticas, pero también alude a las formas en que los entornos urbanos han sido moldeados por procesos de desarrollo que los vuelven vulnerables los más marginados de la sociedad.
