Family Workshops at the Library: Contemporary Rug Weaving with Aneesa Shami Zizzo

* To ensure a full experience for everyone, the workshop will begin promptly at 1:10 PM. For safety and flow of instruction, participants arriving after 1:45 PM will be unable to join the session.

Learn how to make a knotted rug weaving with yarn and upcycled textiles! This workshop, facilitated by artist Aneesa Shami Zizzo, is inspired by the long history of rug making in many cultures, specifically in the Southwest Asia, North Africa, and Arab regions. Focusing on techniques like modified larks head knotting, plain weaving, and winding yarn balls, participants will learn the basics of weaving by playing with different fibers, color, and texture to create a small rug. All levels of experience are welcome and all materials will be provided.

Family Workshops at the Library: Tiny Treasures: A Polymer Keychain Lab with SHG’s Youth Committee

Discover the art of miniatures in this fun polymer keychain workshop! Led by SHG’s Youth Committee members, participants will explore hands-on sculpting techniques to create their own tiny wearable artworks. Inspired by favorite summer fruits, traditional snacks, and refreshing drinks, each keychain becomes a small celebration of cultural memory and imagination. This hands-on workshop is for all ages and experience levels. All materials will be provided. Walk-ins welcome.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:

The Self Help Graphics Youth Committee is made up of a collective of youth ages 15-20 living in East Los Angeles. They  support SHG’s youth-led programs and events, uplifting issues important to young people in the community. Members have access to enriching opportunities, such as gaining art-making skills with visiting artists. Through these experiences, they develop leadership skills and learn how the arts play a role in storytelling, advocacy, civic engagement, and more, connecting and collaborating with like-minded peers. This is a paid 9 month opportunity, from September to early June.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:

Martha Carrillo is a Los Angeles–based artist, printmaker, and educator. Carillo is a teaching artist for SHG’s Barrio Mobile Art Studio, leading workshops on printmaking and other mixed-media practices, like paper mache, jewelry, zine-making, and wearable art. She is the Artistic Director of Heart on Arts where she curates live art and music events.

This Valentine’s Day make radical political posters using stencil printmaking techniques with artist Melissa Govea. In this workshop, participants will design and print their own political posters inspired by art used in social movements. You’ll learn the basics of cutting stencils, working with bold text and simple imagery. Print your own poster to take home, share, or use in future organizing. This free workshop is for all ages and experience levels. All materials will be provided.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:

Melissa Govea (Purépecha) is a Los Angeles–based artist known for her interdisciplinary practice exploring labor, identity, and community. In collaboration with Self Help Graphics & Art, Govea was commissioned by The Huntington to create a new mural for the West Coast debut of Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where she also has an installation on view until March 2, 2026. Participants will learn how to create a handmade stencil and have it printed on a 11x17 poster with vibrant ink. Come and create fun designs and a one-of-a-kind poster to take home!

NOTICE: THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED!

Create a Foam Block Print at a free family workshop at the East Los Angeles County Library on Saturday June 14 at 1 PM with teaching artist Ernesto Vazquez. Learn the basic techniques of relief printing through foam blocks. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore various methods of ink application to create depth and texture in their prints as well as creating designs using positive and negative imprints. Make fun designs and a one-of-a-kind print! This workshop is open to all ages and no prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided to participants. Walk-ins are welcome!
