This Valentine’s Day make radical political posters using stencil printmaking techniques with artist Melissa Govea. In this workshop, participants will design and print their own political posters inspired by art used in social movements. You’ll learn the basics of cutting stencils, working with bold text and simple imagery. Print your own poster to take home, share, or use in future organizing. This free workshop is for all ages and experience levels. All materials will be provided.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:

Melissa Govea (Purépecha) is a Los Angeles–based artist known for her interdisciplinary practice exploring labor, identity, and community. In collaboration with Self Help Graphics & Art, Govea was commissioned by The Huntington to create a new mural for the West Coast debut of Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where she also has an installation on view until March 2, 2026. Join us for our monthly Family Workshop at the East Los Angeles County Library. We welcome Teaching Artist Oscar Rodriguez, who will lead a Stencil Screen Printing workshop. Participants will learn how to create a handmade stencil and have it printed on a 11x17 poster with vibrant ink. Come and create fun designs and a one-of-a-kind poster to take home!

Create a Foam Block Print at a free family workshop at the East Los Angeles County Library on Saturday June 14 at 1 PM with teaching artist Ernesto Vazquez. Learn the basic techniques of relief printing through foam blocks. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore various methods of ink application to create depth and texture in their prints as well as creating designs using positive and negative imprints. Make fun designs and a one-of-a-kind print! This workshop is open to all ages and no prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided to participants. Walk-ins are welcome!
